Why I needed the update
Got home late from grocery shopping tonight and totally missed the game. My buddy Pedro bet me a beer that Athletic would win, so I needed to know ASAP whether I owe him drinks. My phone was dying but I plugged it in real quick.
Checking the score step by step
First I opened this sports app I usually use, but the damn thing kept spinning. Must’ve been overloaded or something. Hit refresh like five times – still just loading dots. Got annoyed and closed it completely.
Next I went to my mobile browser and typed in “football scores today”. Top result showed scores but only from early games. Scrolled down like a madman trying to find La Liga section. Found it but Villarreal-Athletic said “LIVE” even though match should’ve ended! What nonsense.
Remembered Twitter always has real-time updates. Logged in and searched #VillarrealAthletic. Saw a bunch of Spanish tweets with fire emojis and crying faces. Couldn’t tell who won! Then spotted an English tweet saying “Yellow Submarine sinks Basque hopes!” – that sounded promising.
Confirming the result
Went back to that first sports app, now working. Finally saw the proper scorecard:
- Final score: Villarreal 3 – 2 Athletic
- Goal scorers: Moreno (2), Chukwueze for Villarreal
- Winner: Villarreal obviously!
Felt super relieved because Pedro owes me now. Screenshotted the result page immediately in case he tries to argue later.
After getting the score
Texted Pedro “Pay up tomorrow!” with the screenshot. Put my dying phone back on charger. Now watching extended highlights on TV while eating leftovers. That second goal from Chukwueze was filthy! Kinda wish I saw it live.
